"SYNTHETIC PREMARIN" IS HERE!: FDA APPROVES CENESTIN IN 1999 You are welcome to print this page in its entirety - with credit intact - and pass it on to anyone who might find it of interest. Please do not copy and paste the text from this page onto another web site - you may quote from it, with a link back. A new drug called, CENESTIN, a form of synthetic conjugated estrogens, is now on the market and available to women to treat the symptoms of menopause. Produced by Duramed Pharmaceuticals in Ohio, CENESTIN may mean the beginning of the end of the use of horses to make estrogen replacement therapy drugs from pregnant mares' urine (PMU). Equine Advocates believes that this new drug, which has been dubbed, "synthetic Premarin," should end the excuse or reason to ever use or exploit another horse again for the purpose of producing estrogen replacement drugs. No mare should ever have to waste away on a "pee line" and then be slaughtered. No foal should have to be slaughtered as the result of the current indiscriminate breeding practices involved in this industry where approximately 80,000 mares are impregnated annually in order to produce Premarin and other PMU products. Duramed has launched an aggressive publicity campaign to inform the public and the medical community about CENESTIN, which has included colorful full-page ads in many women's magazines and medical journals. Quoting the ad from its new "HOW COOL ARE YOU WITH MENOPAUSE?" campaign, Duramed says: "MENOPAUSE IS AN INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCE. Shouldn't your choice for symptom relief be, too? Now CENESTIN offers you an FDA-approved choice in estrogen replacement therapy that's 100% derived from soy and yam, instead of PREMARIN which is made from pregnant horses' urine. The choice of how you control the hot flashes and night sweats of menopause is yours..." Sadly, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did not approve CENESTIN as a synthetic/generic form of PREMARIN, even though this is what experts say it is. Because of that unfortunate, and what we also believe to be a heartless and highly political decision by the FDA, horses will continue to suffer and be slaughtered by the thousands every year. Nothing will change substantially until the public and the medical community become completely familiar with Cenestin and understand that finally a form or conjugated estrogens which is made completely from plants and free of unknown substances (which Premarin has), can be prescribed in place of drugs made from horse urine. It is the obligation of all of us in the equine and animal protection community to launch major public relations campaigns to educate the public and the medical community on the important point that the cruel and inhumane treatment of horses to produce drugs from PMU is no longer necessary and should be stopped. Then and only then will we begin to see an end to the suffering and the slaughter. We believe and hope that once the word is out, that PREMARIN will be OUT!
