Promoting The Humane And Responsible Treatment of Horses
"Journey," an aged mare pony who had been used and abused at a summer riding camp in Rhode Island, was rescued by Equine Advocates at a slaughter auction in New Holland, Pennsylvania in 1997. "We purchased her directly from a 'killer buyer,' said Wagner. "She was definitely going to slaughter." "Journey" may have well been responsible for saving other abused and exploited camp horses from being slaughtered, as she became the star of a two-part series broadcast on FOX NEWS. The report, which was about the tragic fate of most "camp horses," showed how thousands of horses from summer camps are unloaded by horse traders and "killer buyers" every year from the end of August through October and November at slaughter auctions across the U.S. Tragically, the majority of them who end up at these places wind up being sold for slaughter. Equine Advocates plans to do a major public relations campaign in order to educate the public about how to choose a good summer camp, riding academy, dude ranch, etc. "There are humane operations out there," Wagner added. "One needs to take the time to find and research them." As for "Journey," her story had a very happy ending. She was adopted by a loving family and is living in Maryland.
