Rescue Stories: American Saddlebred Rescue

Equine Advocates went to court in 1999 to purchase and rescue 11 neglected American Saddlebred horses embroiled in a bankruptcy case in New Jersey. There were two stallions and nine mares, six of whom were pregnant. "This was our most difficult rescue to date," said Wagner, "because most of these horses had never been handled.

"On one day, it took us five and a half hours just to load seven horses. That's how difficult and dangerous it was. Luckily, no one was hurt and all the horses arrived at their destinations uninjured."

Three of the rescued mares are featured here.

Star & Rosy

"Star" and "Rosy" went to a home in New York, with the former giving birth to a healthy colt. "Sienna" also went to a family in New York. She, too, gave birth to a healthy colt, named, "Spirit." Since their rescue, most of these horses have undergone some type of training. "Sienna," several of the other mares and the two stallions (now geldings) are already being ridden. "I want to take this opportunity to thank the wondeful people who came forward and adopted these horses," said Wagner. "They all knew they had their work cut out for them, but yet they all wanted to be part of this rescue.

Sienna & Spirit

"I also want to thank all the individuals and organizations that came forward with funding to help us purchase and rescue these animals. This was a daunting task that involved the help and assistance of many people. We thank them all for their part in this unique and incredible rescue operation."
