Promoting The Humane And Responsible Treatment of Horses
In November of 1998, the State of California voted to make horse slaughter for human consumption illegal in their state...keep the pressure up! More states would have to pass similar legislation in order for horse slaughter to be banned nationally.
Why Equine Advocates?I started Equine Advocates in 1996 because of the horse slaughter issue; and that's why I've created this website. We're here to fix problems like the ones I listed and make some important changes. We're working to:
Our Fight To Oppose Horse SlaughterOne of our most important goals is to bring about greater public awareness of the horse slaughter industry and hopefully contribute to its demise. It seems that every aspect of the horse business has links to horse slaughter. Responsible horse ownership, which includes discriminate, thoughtful breeding practices and humane euthanasia, could help to finally put an end to the needless suffering of thousands of horses in America every year.Horses are companion animals, just like dogs and cats. Like our beloved canine and feline friends, America's equines deserve love and compassion at the end of their lives, instead of terror and abuse. Horse slaughter is NOT and NEVER WILL BE a form of humane euthanasia. It is an industry based on greed and used as a tool to dispose of unwanted horses for profit. OUR HORSES DESERVE BETTER.
The Meat Man ComethEvery week, countless thoroughbreds and standardbreds who have broken down on the track or are just not fast enough to compete for purse money, are carted off to auctions and slaughter plants. One standardbred track in New Jersey gets a regular visit from the "Meat Man" twice a week. Racing is a major contributor to the slaughter industry, sending approximately a third of all horses slaughtered in the United States and Canada to processing plants every year. There are currently three USDA-inspected horse slaughter plants in the US and four in Canada which all process horse meat for human consumption in Europe and Japan. Some cuts of horse meat are now selling for up to $25 per pound. According to the USDA and the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture, approximately 100,000 US-bred horses are slaughtered at these plants, yielding an annual revenue of more than $300 million.
We Can Stop This Vile PracticeThe photos that follow were taken at major slaughter auctions, and clearly shows that it is business as usual and that suffering abounds.California passed the first historic anti-horse slaughter legislation in the US in 1998. The Save The Horses campaign, headed by Cathleen Doyle, acquired 750,000 signatures from California voters so that a state initiative to ban horse slaughter could be voted on. Californians overwhelmingly made their choice very clear: No California horse may be slaughtered for human consumption or bred, sold, or transported from the state for that purpose. A stunning victory, indeed! While eating horseflesh may seem repulsive to most Americas, we have to face the reality that we are responsible for the gross equine over-population problem which inspired foreign interests to create the horse slaughter industry in the US. By providing our companion horses with peaceful deaths in a humane manner, this unspeakable practice could become a thing of the past.
Equine Advocates has already networked to successfully place unwanted horses in new, loving homes. We need your support to continue this program and help provide financial aid for horse transport, gelding operations, and humane euthanasia.
Instead of breeding your horses, why not rescue one?
