Wild Horse Crisis

URGENT! PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW!

Death by Slaughter: Thousands of wild horses will face this cruel and horrific fate unless the American people fight back.

What You Can Do To Stop the Slaughter and Extermination of America’s Wild Horses and Burros

  • We at Equine Advocates strongly support H.R. 297 and S. 576. We urge everyone to call, write, fax and e-mail their respective Representatives in the House and their Senators. To find the contact information for members of the House of Representatives, visit www.house.gov. To find your U.S. Senators, visit www.senate.gov. In addition, you might also want to separately thank Congressman Nick Rahall (WV) and Senator Robert Byrd (WV) for introducing H.R. 297 and S. 576, respectively. (Equine Advocates also supports H.R. 503, a bill introduced by Congressman John Sweeney (NY) that would ban horse slaughter for human consumption. Please ask you Reps in the House to support that bill, as well.)

Here is a sample letter:

Dear Congressman or Congresswoman __________:
I am writing to urge you to vote for HR 297, which was introduced on January 25, 2005 by Congressman Nick Rahall (WV). This bill would reinstate the protection of our wild free-roaming horses and burros which was lifted by the Burns Amendment (Section 142) of the recently passed spending bill that privatized them and allows them to be sold for slaughter. This rider was slipped into the spending bill without so much as a word, a warning or a hearing and would never have passed if introduced the conventional way. Please act swiftly to repeal the Burns Amendment by voting for HR 297 and reinstating the protection of our precious wild herds.

Sincerely,
_______

(For letters to your U.S. Senators, change the bill number to S. 576 where applicable and change Congressman Nick Rahall's name to Senator Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia who introduced S. 576 on March 9, 2005.)

  • Contact Senator Conrad Burns, who smuggled the deadly Burns Amendment into the Appropriations Bill. This death warrant, disguised as a bill, will cause pain, suffering and completely destroy our remaining wild herds. Thousands of these majestic animals will experience terrifying deaths by slaughter. Burns needs to hear from everyone, as he was put up to this and is responsible for slipping it into the recently-passed Appropriations Bill. Call: (202) 224-2644; Fax: (202) 224-8594; E-Mail: Visit his website.
  • Protest the actions of the BLM and its sale of wild horses for commercial purposes. Lodge your complaints to Kathleen Clarke, Director, Bureau of Land Management, 1849 C Street NW, Room 406-LS, Washington, D.C. 20240; Fax: (202) 452-5124; E-Mail: kathleen_clarke@blm.gov. Let her know that you are upset and disgusted by what the BLM is doing and that you strongly support reinstating the protection of America's wild horses and burros.
  • Spread the word to everyone you know about this issue. Ask them to take action and have their voices heard, just as you did. That is the only way we can stop the slaughter and the abuse.

Let's preserve our culture and reject the despicable practice of horse slaughter by being determined, unrelenting and acting forcefully to reverse the terrible damage that has already been done in the name of greed.

Mustangs and burros can be managed humanely in the wild. Only Americans united can make a difference and stop the slaughter. Please take action today! You can make a difference.
